Monica in the South Seas
In July 1975, Monica Flaherty, cinéma vérité pioneer Richard Leacock and Sarah Hudson travelled to the island of Savai ́i in Samoa. Monica was returning to her childhood paradise to create a sound version of the 1926 silent feature film, Moana, made by her parents, Robert and Francis. Monica, Sarah and Ricky have to navigate the complex Samoan culture of gifts, exchanges and honoring.
