Meet the individuals tasked with the most difficult job of the festival – selecting the winning films in our competition categories.
Best Nordic Documentary Award
Alexandre Marionneau – Head of International Co-Productions for the Society and Culture Department, ARTE France.
After being a teacher abroad, working in France 2 as a commissioning editor and running an NGO, Alexandre Marionneau is now head of international coproductions for the Society and Culture Department of Arte France.
Marie Kloos – Senior Programming Manager, MUBI
Marie Kloos is the Senior Programming Manager for Europe at MUBI. Previously, she worked as a programmer for DOK Leipzig and as the programme coordinator for the Marrakech International Film Festival. She has been on the programme teams for Berlinale Forum, Interfilm Berlin and has worked for several arthouse cinemas and alternative cinema spaces. She studied in Berlin, Paris and Montreal and holds an MA in philosophy.
Magnus Gertten – Film Director and Winner of the Best Nordic Documentary Award 2022
Magnus Gertten is an award-winning director from Malmö, Sweden, where he runs the production company Auto Images together with producer Ove Rishøj Jensen. Among his latest docs are the Scandinavian box-office hit, the music doc Tusen bitar (2014), the investigating of an archive film reel in Every Face Has a Name (2015), the soccer legend portrait Becoming Zlatan (2016), the human rights doc Only the Devil Lives without Hope (2020) and the love story of Nelly & Nadine, which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in 2022. Nelly & Nadine has so far been screened at more than 120 international film festivals and won 23 awards, including the Best Nordic Documentary award at the Nordisk Panorama 2022. Magnus Gertten’s documentaries are character-driven, often made in an intimate style and with a powerful emotional narrative. Since 1998, he has made 12 feature length documentaries for international tv channels and film festivals.
Lucie Kon – Commissioning Editor, BBC Storyville
Lucie is Commissioning Editor on Storyville, the BBC’s landmark international feature documentary strand, where she commissions, co-produces and curates a diverse and distinctive slate that brings the best feature documentary films from around the world to BBC audiences. Her work has spanned a range of factual genres, from feature docs to arts, history, observational, biographical and investigations/ current affairs. She is a seasoned, and well-respected industry leader, as adept at working with experienced talent as she is at spotting, nurturing and inspiring new, diverse talent. She has been a mentor for Screenskills, the Momentum project and the Edinburgh Ones to Watch, is a Board member of the EBU documentary committee and a member of the Advisory Committee for the 2023 Edinburgh TV Festival. She is a seasoned public speaker and expert panellist.
Best Nordic Short Film Award
Fredrik S. Hana – Film Director and Winner of the Best Nordic Short Film Award 2022
Fredrik’s work as a filmmaker began in 2010, after two years of film school in Stavanger. After school ended, he created a collective together with other aspiring film workers and started making short films and music videos as director, writer and editor. His films have traveled the world ever since his short “Angst, Piss & Drid” premiered at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. During the course of 8 years, from 2012 to 2020, Fredrik’s work has screened on 100+ film festivals. Hana has since made the short films “Autumn Harvest”, “Sister Hell” and “Rosalina” and a series of music videos for the Norwegian heavy metal band Kvelertak. In February 2021, “CODE NAME: Nagasaki”, his first ever documentary feature, was awarded with the Grand Jury Award for ‘Best Documentary’ during the Slamdance Film Festival. In 2022 he was awarded the prestigious Méliès d’Or Award for ‘Best European Fantastic Film’ for the experimental short film “FROM.BEYOND”.
Carmen Gray – Film Critic and Programmer
Carmen Gray is a journalist, critic, film programmer and industry consultant from New Zealand who now lives in Berlin. She has written for publications including The New York Times, The Guardian, Sight & Sound, Criterion, Art Review, Screen, and MUBI, is a contributing critic for trade magazine The Film Verdict, and was formerly Film Editor of Dazed & Confused magazine. She is on the selection committees of the Generation section of the Berlin International Film Festival, the International Short Film Festival Winterthur, and Open City Docs in London. She consults on projects and festival strategy, and is an industry adviser on films at the editing stage for First Cut Lab, and Doculab in Guadalajara.
Lucie Canistro – Short Fim Acquisition, UniversCiné
Lucie Canistro is in charge of short film acquisitions for the French VOD and SVOD platform UniversCiné, and the programmer of its YouTube Channel Univers Court, dedicated to short films with more than 60,000 subscribers. UniversCiné stands out as the reference in the arthouse and patrimonial cinema in France (more than 10 000 movies online) and offers a catalog of more than 900 short films to date.
New Nordic Voice Award
Anita Mathal Hopland – Film Director and Winner of the New Nordic Voice Award 2022
Anita M Hopland is a Danish documentary director and cinematographer with Pakistani and Norwegian parents. She grew up in Copenhagen but has always moved freely between her roots in Pakistan, Norway, and Denmark. Much like the breakers of today, she herself navigates a global arena that is not rooted in or defined by nationality. She directed the documentary ON THE EDGE OF FREEDOM (2017) with Jens Lengerke which investigates another underground culture; urban exploring, and MOOSA LANE (2022) which explores her own family’s way of navigating family relations in a global scene.
Birgir Thor Møller – Head of North Atlantic Film Days
Birgir Thor Møller was born (1970) in Iceland, but lives in Copenhagen. He is the head of the annual film festival North Atlantic Film Days (Nordatlantiske Filmdage) at The North Atlantic House (Nordatlantens Brygge), where he also holds the position as program editor. Apart from organizing film, literature and other cultural events and festivals since 2005, Møller has published essays and articles related to Nordic and especially North Atlantic cinema and film history in a variety of publications, including the books Transnational Cinema in a Global North: Nordic Cinema in Transition and Historical Dictionary of Scandinavian Cinema. He holds an M.A. in film studies from the Institute of Film and Media Studies, University of Copenhagen.
Jane Ray – Artistic Director, the Whickers
Jane Ray, from London UK, set up and now runs The Whickers, a global production fund for emerging documentary talent. She is a multi-award-winning documentary maker in her own right with 29 years on staff at the BBC. Jane had started there as a radio reporter, worked as an investigative journalist, and ended up as an Editorial Guardian for Worldwide Content and Production. Now she combines the Whickers with running her own company Cat Flap Media. Cat Flap has consulted on docs selected this year for Sundance and Sheffield and created a podcast for BBC Sounds. As well as being a sought-after judge and advisor Jane has also run doc courses for the BFI and various colleges and has an Honorary Fellowship for services to Documentary at University College London.
