Billy Paul started as a singer with Charlie Parker at Birdland at age sixteen. He struggled through jazz with Miles Davis in the 1950s and pop with Roberta Flack in the 60s to finally bloom with the Philly Sound in 1970. His story is the story of how the oppression of the African-Americans formed black culture, and how the civil rights movement formed soul music.
