On Foreign Soil
Vööröl maal - vieraalla maalla
Edgar Vaalgamaa, the retired vicar of Iitti, is the only Livonian in Finland. He is one of only eight people still alive with the almost extinct Livonian language as their native tongue. The Baltic-Finnish fishing culture of the Livonians, then still with a fragile foothold in Latvia, died out during the Cold War. In this poetic documentary, Vaalgamaa sits in his garden in Finland. Vintage Estonian documentary footage brings the old world briefly back to life.
