The Second World War transformed Icelandic society. Occupation brought full employment and an economic upswing, and people flocked to the towns in search of work. Norwegian troops in exile taught British and later American forces to survive and fight in sub-Arctic conditions. The work of the Norwegian Ski Brigade in Iceland has received little attention in studies of the war years. But some members of the former brigade are still alive.
