In 1970, following a major economic crisis, protest and political opposition were widespread in Iceland. Two events dominated the country’s attention: the occupation of the Icelandic embassy in Stockholm in April and the failure of a dam in Laxá in August. Activist students took a stand against activist farmers. At the same time, women took radical action for their rights and the Red Stocking Movement was established.
